Jake Bugg defends his co-written music

Jake Bugg has spoken out against those who have criticised his music being co-written by professional songwriters.

The 19-year old was speaking to The Daily Star at this past weekend's Isle Of Wight festival, where he batted away notions of inauthenticity about tracks like "Lightning Bolt" by saying, "I'm still very young, and I should soak up what I can learn from people with more experience."

All-but four tracks from debut album Jake Bugg feature a co-writing credit from the likes of Iain Archer, Matt Prime or former Longpig Crispin Hunt, but Bugg claims "I'm taking it on board, so I can step into writing on my own, eventually."

Bugg previously hit out at the 'manufactured' pop of One Direction et al.

Despite his current dependence on co-songwriter's, Bugg insists that his vision be borne out by the sessions. Case-in-point, recent Nashville sessions where he rejected pre-prepared material by seasoned veterans, claiming he told them, "'No mate, let's get our guitars out and see what happens together.' It was really disappointing."

Bugg plays Friday July 19th at Longitude.

Paul McCartney shows support for Pussy Riot at Bonnaroo

Paul McCartney once again showed his support for the jailed Pussy Riot members.

After previously writing an open letter urging the Russian government to free Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, Macca used his appearance at Bonnaroo this past weekend to once again support their cause.

During his performance of "Back In The USSR", an image simply saying 'Free Pussy Riot' was flashed up on his big screen.

Tolokonnikova and Alekhina are currently serving two-year sentences in Russia on "hooliganism" charges, following their performance of "Punk Prayer" at the Christ The Saviour Cathedral in Moscow.

Alekhina recently ended an 11-day hunger strike in protest at her prison conditions, while two disguised members of the band appeared in New York earlier this month.

Arctic Monkeys have been road-testing new material over the weekend, with Hultsfred in Sweden and NorthSide in Denmark (not Coolock) given airings of "Mad Sounds".

Sounding like they've been hanging out with their good pal Richard Hawley, the track is a mellow affair and one which Alex Turner told the NorthSide crowd yesterday that it could afford them time to "keep warm by cuddling or something like that".

Check out the fan-shot footage of "Mad Sounds".

This isn't the first song t'Arctics have been trying out on their audiences this year. Last month, the Sheffield band debuted "Do I Wanna Know?" in California. It's a track they opened both Scandinavian appearances with this past weekend.

Arctic Monkeys play Electric Picnic later in the summer, and new album is due this year.

R Kelly loves a good festival (amongst other things), who knew?

The slow jamz king partook in one of the three Superjams at this past weekend's Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, which was led by My Morning Jacket's Jim James and John Oates, of Hall & Oates. This comes just a couple of months after his guest spot with Phoenix at Coachella.

Immediately after his headline spot, Kelly hot-footed it to the Superjam where he led the band in a rendition of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come". You can check out the fan-shot footage here.

Also present were Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard, Sly & The Family Stone bassist Larry Howard and Billy Idol, who fronted a version of the T-Rex classic "Get It On".

Perhaps feeling like they were missing out on the Superjam action, Young The Giant paid homage to R Kelly with their version of "Ignition". Their remix to it, if you will. Get on it.

Frightened Rabbit & The Minutes added to Longitude

How does one fill the Modest Mouse-shaped hole in the Longitude line-up? By wedging two class bands in in their place, that's how, bucko.

Frightened Rabbit and The Minutes have today been added to the already pretty solid line-up for the Marlay Park festival.

The former followed the release of UK Top Ten album Pedestrian Verse in March with the Backyard Skulls EP in late March.

The Minutes, meanwhile have recently shared some material from bands they've been helping to get off the ground in their own studio. Take a listen.

Death Cab For Cutie working on new album

A new album from Death Cab For Cutie is in the works. And this news comes from no less a source than Mr Ben Gibbard himself.

In response to the news that Death Cab's oeuvre is to get a synth-pop re-jigging on The Electronic Anthology Project of Death Cab For Cutie, a disgruntled fan took to Twitter to vent spleen at the lack of new material from the Washington group.

But, alas, Gibbard was monitoring the @dcfc (not Derby County's) mentions, it would seem.

THIS IS HAPPENING! Do not fear. RT @brianfulda: I wish @dcfc would just return to what they do best - writing songs together.

— Benjamin Gibbard (@Gibbstack) June 13, 2013

Gibbard has been looking back, of late, what with the Postal Service reunion, and Death Cab's forthcoming performances of Transatlanticism in Portland in August.

But news of a new Death Cab album will come as good news to those - like the above Brian Fulda - who still feel bereft since 2011's Codes And Keys.

Codes want your help to get second album made

Codes are the latest act to turn to their fans to help get an album made.

Following the likes of Fight Like Apes, The Walls and Carol Keogh's FundIt campaigns, the Dublin quartet have taken to Indiegogo in the hope of raising €7,000 to complete the follow up to 2009's Trees Dream In Algebra.

Contribution points start at €5 and go up as far as €5,000, a sum that will earn you an executive producer credit on the new album, as well as an on-stage thank you and a rake of extras. €500 will earn you a host of goodies (t-shirts, artwork etc), but most amazingly, a game of bowling with the lads.

Stump up €1,000 and Codes will come 'round to your house, cook you dinner, and perform acoustically. If you've anything to spare the lads, head to their Indiegogo site now and donate.

Bloc Party to take indefinite hiatus

Bloc Party are going away again, after Russell Lissack revealed the band will go on an indefinite hiatus after their run of festival appearances draws to a close this summer.

As National Post reports, the Bloc Party guitarist was speaking at Toronto's Field Trip this past weekend, and said "Definitely after we finish the festivals in the summer we'll be taking some time off."

As regards how long that hiatus will be, that remains unclear, "At least six months, maybe a year maybe two years, it's hard to say."

If this break comes to pass, it will be the band's second - the band having come close to breaking up between 2009 and 2012's comeback album, Four. Band members extra-curicular activities may inform how long the next hiatus lasts, with Lissack adding, "Once we start taking time off people start doing their own thing. So once people start doing things then you'll start naturally extending how long we spend apart."

From reading his subsequent quotes on the atmosphere within the band, it appears to be some ways south of high-fives, champagne-on-cornflakes, S Club 7-esque good times, so it may be a while before we see Bloc Party again.

What we will get, however, is an EP. Lissack all-but confirms May's news that there would be a release this summer, "I guess this is going to be more of a stand alone EP just representing what we're doing now rather than what we're going to be doing."

Blur's Alex James confirms Hong Kong recording sessions

Alex James has confirmed that Blur did take to the studio during their recent stint in Hong Kong.

The Britpop legends, who haven't released an album since Think Tank back in 2003, but James told Bang Showbiz that he hopes a new album comes to pass.

Originally, it was Damon Albarn who let slip on-stage that the band had entered the studio while in Hong Kong they would "try and record another record."

James confirms the news, saying "We had a few days off in Hong Kong and thought, 'What the hell, let's go to the studio'. It went very well. The opportunity came and we took it. Any chance to get together and make music is very welcome. It was absolutely brilliant. We were just jamming, but it was good.

Blur play the grounds of IMMA in Kilmainham on Thursday August 1st.

The Replacements to play first gigs in 22 years

The Replacements have announced their first gigs in 22 years.

The legendary Minneapolis indie icons played their last gig in 1991, but the last year has seen an upturn in activity from the group. Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson recorded an EP for guitarist Slim Dunlap who had suffered a stroke.

Stinson and Westerberg will front a yet-to-be-finalised Replacements line-up at three Riot Fest dates in Chicago, Denver and Toronto in September. Also confirmed for the travelling circus are Blink 182, Public Enemy, Iggy & The Stooges, The Stranglers and a geansaí-load more.

And after that 22 year gap, it seems only appropriate that we bring you what now transpires to have been a comma, rather than a full-stop, to their career.

Self-Titled have gotten hold of The Replacements last gig at Chicago's Grant Park from 1991.

Watch the trailer for new Big Star doc

Big Star are one of the most influential bands of the 70's, leaving their stamp on everyone from REM to The Flaming Lips, and members of both bands contribute to Nothing Can Hurt Me, a long-overdue documentery on the group.

Led by Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, the band garnered plenty of critical acclaim for their three fantastic albums - #1 Record, Radio City and Third/Sister Lovers - but oddly, never the sales that should accompany such plaudits. When the success Big Star deserved, and likely craved, eluded them they broke up in 1974.

Nothing Can Hurt Me is directed by Drew DiNicola and charts the rise, and sad fall of the Memphis group. As well as the above-mentioned Lips and REM, Cheap Trick, Robyn Hitchcock and Cameron Crowe all contribute to what looks like a stellar documentary. Due in July, you can check out the trailer here:

Bob Dylan touring Europe in the autumn

As we all know, gambling is a mug's game, but you'd be well advised to stick a few quid on Bob Dylan visiting Ireland before you begin your Christmas shopping.

Dylan has announced a string of dates in Europe and the UK for October and November of this year. Beginning in Oslo on October 10th, and taking in most nations eligible to vote in the Eurovision, Dylan's tour will be particularly detailed once he hits the UK.

His Bobness will play a trio of date each of Glasgow's Clyde Arena, Blackpool's Opera House, and London's Royal Albert Hall. And given his regular stopovers in Ireland on past tours, Irish dates are almost certainly to follow in the coming days and weeks.

If you're unwilling to wait for any Irish dates, tickets for the UK shows go on sale this Friday (June 14th) at 9am.

Watch: New trailer for Alan Partridge movie

"That was soft rock cocaine enthusiasts, Fleetwood Mac"... and so begins the new trailer for Alan Partridge movie, Alpha Papa.

While we realise this is not strictly music news, we are always willing to give a leg-up to another member of the radio fraternity. In this case, North Norfolk Digital's most notorious presenter.

The movie finds North Norfolk's premier digital station under siege by Partridge's colleague, Pat Farrell, played by none other than our own Colm "ah good jayzis" Meaney (whose Irish accent almost seems fake). The film is slated for release on August 7th. Check out the trailer.

Kraftwerk have a new album in the works

Longitude-bound Kraftwerk have confirmed that a new album from them is indeed in the works.

Speaking to The Guardian, Ralf Hutter said their recent Catalogue tour, which has seen them dedicate nights to specific albums, has been a full-stop of sorts for the Dusseldorf veterans. "Now this is done, one to eight....we can concentrate on number nine."

All well and good, except there's two albums from Kraftwerk's that our Ralf ain't counting - namely Kraftwerk and Kraftwerk 2, released in 1970 & 1972 respectively.

Kraftwerk's last official album release came in 2003 with Tour de France Soundtracks, but as Hutter revealed to the New York Times recently, "We didn't fall asleep" and they're still putting in long hours at their fabled Kling Klang Studios. When pressed on a schedule for the proposed album's release, Hutter would only reply, "Soon".

Kraftwerk will perform at Longitude, complete with stunning 3D visuals, on Sunday July 21st at Marlay Park.

Twenty people were killed and €1.5billion worth of damaged caused when two-weeks worth of tornadoes ravaged the state. After all, this is our home and they are us and we are them."

Jared Followill of Kings Of Leon - who were raised in the Oklahoman town of Talihina - added, "We were all devastated by what happened there...we have family and friends that were affected by tornadoes...this is the least we could do."

All of the gig's proceeds will go to central Oklahoma community organizations and charities.
